A smoke-free policy is hard to enforce. What will the repercussions be if someone is caught smoking on campus? Is it really worth the time and effort? Will student success rates drop because smokers feel more irritable and less likely to attend WCC?

I used to smoke and feel that smokers should have an area to smoke as it is a way to relieve stress.

Possibly try all of the above, and definitely be very stressed out and unhappy. I wouldn't want to stay at school and study after class, why should my rights be taken away just because some people are santimonus, self-righteous and controlling and they believe only their way is right, and they don't believe in compromise since they think they are right. It is unfair to persecute one group(smokers) beyond the letter of the law.

I'm a smoker, I think it's fair that they make an area to smoke, but if they ban smoking completely that would be unfair and I'll guarantee that a lot of students will drop out of college, smoking calms my nerves and it helps me though out the day.

I am not a smoker either, but I have so many friends who do. In my opinion we have too many rules already, and we should refrain from adding more. I campus is fine just the way it is.

I would probably drop out of school. Because the stress of having to go off campus every time I want to have a cigarette.

Smokers should be assigned to designated areas. As long as we are not affecting others, it shouldn't be a problem. Smokers need to have consideration for non-smokers to which we should be assigned designated areas. Thanks

I feel as if my freedom is being taking away from me. Something that I choose to do, which is smoking, but can no longer do. I definitely support designated areas to keep those who oppose smoking on campus happy, but how are the users going to feel if they can no longer smoke on campus? This is a one way street conversation. Without designated or smoking areas on campus, there will be an increase on irritated student/ faculty, aggresive students/ facutly, more stressed students/faculty and low tolerance.

This survey is biased and does not give those who are non-smokers equal opportunity to voice their concerns.

If WCC goes smoke-free I will be stressed and irritable mental wreck. It's a stress reliever and has saved me from doing a lot of stupid things to people that I would regret.

I probably would transfer to a smoker friendly campus. I don't care for the complete ban on smoking but I will abide by the rules of the designated smoking areas if it was put into action. I do smoke cigarettes but I am actually switching to the e-cigs and that is also listed to ban also. Well like I said I would totally switch campuses!! Please consider making designated smoking sections!!!

A ban does not solve the supposed issues with smoking. it will only resort other unnecessary headaches for everyone including security.

A compromise would be nice. Smoking doesn't really bother but I can see the health concerns. I feel if there were designated smoking areas, those who are concerned can avoid smoke inhalation and smell by avoiding these designated smoking areas. I feel the reason the current smoking areas are not working or are not known is due to the fact that they are very vague, not well "designated/advertised" and there is virtually no enforcement. Enforcement being the biggest factor. Not only does this compromise seem logical due to the fact that it appeases both parties but it can also address one of the biggest problems with smoking in my opinion; which is littering and to my suprise there was no mention or concern of it in the Ka'Ohana article??. This is also another aspect that should be taken into consideration. Malama Aina! Why do most smokers feel they have the right to choose anywhere they please to be their trash can? Come on guys, do you really expect everyone else to clean up after your mess? Lets come together and take pride, be responsible and have respect for the Aina that gives so much to us and do this little part and give back. A compromise, designation of smoking areas and ENFORCEMENT of these areas has something to offer everyone, most importantly the Aina that most of us take for granted and routinely neglect. By isolating smoking within those DESIGNATED areas and having legitimate "butt collecting receptacles" seems logical enough to please everyone. Aloha Aina e Aloha Everyone!

I would now have to sneak around to smoke like a crimminal. Smoking in area where others are not affected is logical and all that is needed. Smoking in parking lot is banned, but cars running their exhaust fumes right next to you is okay? ? Rules seem very obsessive and controlling. I

I'm not an addict, my cravings does not affect my daily life. Cigarette smoke totally bothers me, causes immediate headache and it immediately bothers my allergies, even being down wind 20 feet away bothers me so this ban would totally help me have a more pleasant college experience.

Establishing a smoking ban on Windward’s campus targets and alienates a big portion of students, which will result to an enrollment deficiency. Tobacco smoking is a personal choice. As a smoker myself, I feel placing a ban is an invasion of my individual right, such as freedom of expression and religion. The students at WCC, myself included are considerate of nonsmoking faculty, staff, and students- we follow the rules set by administration and only smoke in designated areas. Those who are advocating for the ban on campus argue that banning smoking will “cleanse the campus’ air of impurities that smokers choose to ingest, but should not inflict onto others.” Seriously, people need to wake up and realize those who do not want to ingest the chemicals from cigarette smoke have the ability to avoid designated smoking areas. Nowadays it is inevitable to avoid inhaling air pollution. You can be at a street corner and inhale exhaust fumes from cars, restaurants’ cooking smoking, and dust on the street that are more harmful than a puff of cigarette smoke, yet there are no existence of bans prohibiting driving, cooking and kicking up dust. It is that easy. Nonsmokers are not special, so why is it I have to go through withdraws because of a small group is complaining? I do not know, but I know one thing for sure, if this ban does go through, I will no longer be attending classes here because I will be offended and the repercussions will be worse, such as students rebelling. In addition, they argue, “second hand smoke gives cancer and that should not be tolerated.” In fact, you can get cancer from almost anything: cell phones, microwaves, hair dye chemicals, and even THE FOOD WE PARTAKE because of GMOs. This clearly proves how immature and uneducated some people are. I use it as a way to cope with my emotions, such as stress, irritation, and frustration. This is an unjust practice that breaks one’s individual right. Everyone has a choice, whether or not to be exposed to smoky environments. Lets be honest, mandated smoking bans do not solve this imaginary “smoking problem.” These bans will cause problems because it is a form of oppression and discrimination because administration will be alienating a portion of the student body and can lead to a negative affect on Windward’s enrollment rate.

College is already a stressful situation as it is, we (students) have a lot of stress because of multiple classes, work, etc. As an E-cig smoker, I myself find the few minutes between classes to vape, the most relaxing part of my day at times. I believe we should stick to the 20 feet away from buildings policy, and leave it currently in place. Students are aware of this, and it doesn't seem to have to many issues with students following those guidelines.

With designated smoking areas people who don't smoke can avoid the smoke very easily. If the ban goes int effect I will get all stressed out because I can't smoke. There is not enough time between classes, I'm just gonna end up smoking where ever, like the bathrooms because that is how we used to get away with it in high school, and if that doesn't work I might have to go to H.C.C where I can smoke. Non smokers have the right not to be in the smoke, but smokers also have the right to smoke, it is pretty simple the state already has a law.

I love WCC and would not move to another campus. Smoking is the exact opposite of malama aina, the Earth and people need to be freed from this horrible, disgusting, cancel causing disease of nicotine addiction. If it were banned, it would help everyone and the aina. The aina should come first!

I do not believe a ban will be effective. Adults have a right to smoke. Smokers will smoke, it is a matter of where the administration wants them to do it. Hoow would it be enforced? The ban will create a negative atmosphere. Please designate smoking areas. If you are concerned about smoking, offer quit smoking classes, products and support groups on campus.

I am not a smoker. I do see smokers abusing their priveledge and littering EVERYWHERE. It's gross and so bad for the earth and the creatures who end up with these toxic butts as their food source. If I had an addiction I would hope someone would help me kick my habit rather than accommodate my bad habit.

While I am a recreational smoker, I never smoke at school. In general, I just don't smoke much during the day. Nevertheless, there are a number of students and faculty on campus who do smoke during the day and I see no reason to ostracize them from our campus simply because we want to follow Manoa's lead. Our campus is huge and there are a plenty of outdoor areas where smokers can smoke and not bother anyone. I'm all for keeping smoking areas, but let's not punish and vilify people for smoking. A lot of people are using it as a coping mechanism for other things. Let's face it, we've got a lot of students struggling with addiction and recovery. School is stress enough. Let's not kick them off of our campus entirely. They may not come back. We need an educated community.

Yes, I would consider it because we've been banned twenty feet already, if that is taken away what would we have? Smoking helps us to cope with the everyday stress, classes, and especially with homework! Please consider all aspects before making that choice, we would greatly appreciate it.
