Word Parts - academ


One of the fastest ways to increase your vocabulary is by learning word parts, i.e., roots, prefixes, suffixes or forms.

academ - Latin, originally Academus/Akademus a name of a hero in Greek mythology; then it became a gymnasium near Athens where Plato taught.

academe - place of learning, especially a college or university; academia - scholars and students of the academic world and their activities; academic - connected with education, educational institution, or educational system; academical - belonging to an academy or higher institution of learning; academicism/academism - artistry that relies on conventional techniques or emphasizes the formal aspects of an art form, such as painting or poetry.

So what's an academician or what does academy mean?
