Fishpond/Native Plants Restoration Projects: Receive Independent Study Credits and Stipend!

Prof. David Krupp (krupp@hawaii.edu) has arranged an exciting opportunity for WCC students to receive a $1000 stipend and earn independent study credits for contributing to the restoration, preservation, and environmental monitoring of the Waikalua Loko Fishpond and the Nā Pōhaku O Hauwahine land near Kawai Nui Marsh.

Native Hawaiian students interested in environmental sciences and ecology are especially encouraged to apply, and all interested students should enroll in OCN 101 and email Prof. Krupp at krupp@hawaii.edu.

Participants in the project will prepare proposals outlining which aspects of the restoration and environmental monitoring they will complete, and at the end of the project, they will compose a formal group report.

Starting in Spring 2008, students will receive valuable training in the GPS, applicable software (ArcGIS, Pathfinder Office, Excel, Photoshop, etc.), aerial imagery, surveyor’s transit, pulse-laser rangefinder, other surveying instrumentation, and native plant identification. Field work and report writing will be completed by the end of Summer 2008.
