Oceanit Laboratories Women in Science

Come on you science, technology, engineering, math women of TRiO SSS and get your app in for this amazing opportunity to see high tech science up close and in real life. (Us guys are so jealous.)

Oceanit Laboratories http://www.oceanit.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=967&Itemid=170

and ICS Professor Barbara Hotta at LCC have included WCC in a small grant funded by the University of Hawaii Diversity and Equity Initiative for women interested in pursuing a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) career. Five women (hopefully at least one from WCC) will be chosen to have a paid visit to the Maui Oceanit Research Technology Center. The winners will visit the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory’s Directed Energy Directorate and see critical research, space surveillance and supercomputing projects.

Criteria:

Must attend only one of three two-hour sessions at LCC on 2/19. The registration is at the website below:
http://www.lightmagic.eventbrite.com

I can carpool some students on the 2/19 for the 9 a.m. session if needed.
At the workshop women will be asked to submit a one-two page essay on what they see as a career choice for themselves in a STEM-related field. The top five essays that show an interest in STEM careers will be invited to go to Maui to see what types of careers are available in Hawaii for those women interested in light engineering (
properties of light that inspire and fuel optical science and engineering.) Each student attending the workshop will create their own magical polarized light window relief, an object d' art, fabricated with artistic flair and new found understanding of the properties of light. The goal is to show women careers they never dreamed of and yet are able to pursue in Hawaii.

If you want a winning essay, ask Lance for help. (If you don't want a winning essay, ask Roy or Russell.)
