Aloha WCC friends,
Are you glad that Valentine's Day is over? Do you want to fall in love with something that will never let you down?
Fall in love with language at OUT LOUD IN THE LIBRARY on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 6:00 in the WCC Library.
I know you already marked your calendars for this great event, so this is just a friendly reminder!
Gather for snacks and music by Prof. Ron Loo's students at 6:00.
The reading will begin at 6:30, featuring the following amazing writers:
Eric Chock is co-founding editor of Bamboo Ridge Press and spent 20 years as a Poet in the Schools. He now teaches literature and writing at the University of Hawai‘i-West O‘ahu. His books include Last Days Here and Small Kid Time Hawai‘i.
Alexei Melnick was born and raised on the East O‘ahu, and is currently in the graduate program at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. There, he studied from many greats of Pacific Literature including Rodney Morales, Witti Ihimira, Morgan Blair, and directed study with the late Ian Macmillan for five years, whom Tweakerville is dedicated to. Tweakerville, Melnick's critically acclaimed debut novel, has been featured on KITV news. The Star Advertiser called it “the real thing;” Honolulu Weekly said it was “A watershed in Hawai‘i fiction." Melnick is now writing White and Clear, a book about the gritty realities of meth abuse, a prequel and sequel to Tweakerville.
Desi Poteet earned her AA degree at Windward Community College and her BA and MA (English, Creative Writing) at the University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa where she had the privilege of studying with Ian MacMillan. In 2008, she co-edited Hawai‘i Review, A Special Tribute to Ian MacMillan to honor him on his retirement. Her work has appeared in Hawai‘i Review and Windward CCʻs literary journal, Rain Bird. Recipient of the Myrle Clark Award with Distinction, Desi lives in Punalu‘u with her husband, teaches English at Windward Community College, and writes fiction and screenplays.
Mikki O’Phelan recently graduated with her AA from Windward Community College, and currently attends the University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa. An artist, writer, and active community volunteer, she is also a beloved tutor for the TRiO Student Support Services program at Windward CC.
This event is organized by the Windward CC Language Arts Department and the Windward CC Library. Windward Community College is located at 45-720 Keaʻahala Road in Kāne‘ohe, Hawai‘i.
