Danielle Arias' TRiO SSS Success Story

Name: Danielle Arias
Semester/Year Started at WCC: Fall/2008
Semester/Year Started in TRiO SSS: Fall/2008
Degree(s) Earned at WCC or 4yr. college/university: Associates in Arts
Semester(s)/Year(s) Graduated: Spring/2011

How has TRiO SSS helped you/what services have you used?

Without TRiO SSS I would not be where I am today, pursuing a Bachelor in Social Work degree, and soon a Master degree. As a new student straight out of high school, TRiO SSS helped to set up my class schedule, and offered me tutoring for Math. I wasn’t a lost new student for long. Shortly, I became a tutor myself – TRiO SSS is, and still is, my first and only job. The services I needed for tutoring, the family style lunches to keep me energized each day, free printing and computer use, counseling services when I needed direction, grant aid when I fell short financially, and most of all new friends have been my main strength on campus. I knew where to go when I needed help, and TRiO SSS was always there for me, and still is. Besides my own ‘ohana, TRiO SSS ʻohana has been the greatest source of encouragement for me in attaining my Associates degree at Windward Community College. Surely, TRiO SSS continues to be my source of encouragement today while I am attaining my Bachelor degree at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. This program is important because if it could help me, a lost new student achieve many goals; imagine how many other students could benefit from this program? Windward Community College students, parents, the underprivileged, and working students nationwide, need this program to continue in college and succeed. Please help to keep this program open for future generations, and for the future of Hawai‘i’s students.
