Georgette Reynon's TRiO SSS Success Story

After losing my husband to suicide and becoming an independent parent of two elementary school children I decided to pursue higher education in the career path of social work. I came to Windward Community College in 2011 and I am proud to say that I will be graduating in May 2013 with my associates’ degree. I attribute my upcoming commencement and academic success due in large part to Trio SSS. Trio has afforded me the many services needed to succeed. These services include tutoring, mentoring, free printing, academic advising, childcare when I needed it during my evening classes, free sandwiches so I didn’t have to leave campus which allowed me to stay discipline in my studies, the days and hours of operation especially Fridays allowed me to do my homework without having to take it home and get distracted by my children and life’s other responsibilities, and I gained emotional as well as psychological support encouraging me to keep diligent with reaching my goals. I am a first generation college student and I will be transferring to the University of Hawaii at Manoa in August 2013 where I will be pursuing my BSW in the Myron B. Thompson School of social work. My goal immediately following my BSW is to obtain a MSW. I am extremely passionate about bringing hope to others. I am grateful to the many agencies that have assisted my family with our healing process. I am forever grateful to Trio SSS and all its services that have allowed me to begin fulfilling my educational and life goals of helping others and becoming more self-sufficient to adequately support my family. Again, none of my success to a better life would be possible had it not been for Trio SSS which is built on the true essence of Ohana. I come from a family plagued with alcoholism, drug addiction and incarceration. So having Trio SSS has changed my life because they supported me every step of the way. I pray that this program will be here for future generations to come with adequate funding; meaning either more funds or absolutely no budget cuts, and stay in full operation of accessibility Monday through Friday. I say this not only as a Trio SSS recipient but as a future social worker fully aware of the many social welfare issues still prevalent today. Trio SSS has a variety of participates and it’s a huge success and what I believe to be a necessity if we as students’ are to success.
