Windward Community College will be gathering on March 14th
to mark the one-month anniversary of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman
Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Schools around the nation will
be gathering at 10:00am
for 17 minutes in remembrance of the 17 victims that were killed in the
Parkland shooting. WCC will be marching from Hale Alaka`i down to
Kahekili Highway and back up. The march will take roughly 17 minutes.
Young
people in Hawaii's schools and across the nation are taking a stand.
Since 2013, there have been 300 school shootings in America, that's an
average of once a week!
You are encouraged to stand with our students in this cause. Students that have class at 10:00am will have until 10:30am
to go back to class without any penalty. Students will be responsible
for any work or discussion that they miss. Our Hawai`i `Ohana across the
state, the DOE as well as many of our private schools will also be
walking in solidarity and to honor the movement generated by the
students in Florida.
Organizers encourage you to wear ORANGE! The #NationalSchoolWalkout
is an initiative organized by the Women's March Youth Empower. They
believe, as youth, it is imperative they have spaces where their voices
are being heard.
We hope to see you all there!
