Aloha TRiO SSS and Paipai,
Thought we'd explain some of the other symbolism around TRiO...
Three Rocks Standing on End
The
three rocks standing on end on the rock wall fronting the banyan tree
stand for the three TRiO programs as they reach for the sky. Of course
they fall down in adversity, but always get up like the Japanese saying,
"Nana korobi ya oki"
- seven times down, eight times up. So if you see one down, please help
them up as TRiO SSS'ers always help the one coming behind them who's
down---if you can...hahahahahahah. Takes some practice to balance them,
but it's a fun stress reliever.
Toro (pagoda looking thing)
The
Japanese lanterns were used to illuminate the path for travelers thus
showing them the way so as not to get lost. (Probably need more for TRiO
SSS'ers...hahahahahha.)
Peace Pole
The
white pole on the library side of the lanai is the Peace Pole. It was
erected in the nineties and had writing in various languages
representing peace in cultures around the world. It's good to know the
sides of the pole face east, west, north, and south since TRiO SSS'ers
tends to get lost (see Toro above).
Tree (next to Hotei on library side of lanai)
Don't
know what kind it is, but it was that big when we pulled it from our
gutter. Instead of killing it away, we figured we'd shape it to make
shade for Hotei on hot days and protect him from the rain on others.
4 O'clock High Tea Tables
We
thought we'd show WCC that TRiO guyses get choke class and made too
small kine tables foa 4 O'clock High Tea. And to keep your Laboutins or
Ferragamos clean, we laid marble flooring...kden, the tables stay broke
and we been put table top down so nobody get hurt...hahahahahhaha. No
symbolism, but tired of people asking/wondering. Be sure to tell others
the first story.
If you have any cultural
symbol(s) that symbolize what TRiO SSS is all about, come see us so we
can incorporate it into the TRiO SSS motif/culture/mana/kiai/chi/ feel.
