Word Parts - vert


One of the fastest ways to increase your vocabulary is by learning word parts, i.e., roots, prefixes, suffixes or forms.

The TRiO SSS Scoop will give you a new word part every so often so that you can begin to work on increasing your college vocabulary. Here's your word part for today...

vert means to turn or twist as in:

vertical - perpendicular to the plane of the horizon; vertigo - dizzy, confused state of mind; vertebrate - animal with a backbone, the bone we turn around with; invert - to turn inside out or upside down; convert - to turn from one thing to another; revert - to turn back to an earlier state or condition; controversial - the subject of argument or dispute, turning people or their words against each other; introvert - to turn inward or someone who is shy; extrovert - to turn outward, or someone who is outgoing.

So what do these words mean?

avert, adverse, subversive, adversity, diverse, inversion, diversion, aversion, diversity, diversify, subvert, versus, version, covert, overt, persevere, versatile, converse, or advertise.
