WHO LIKES TO TUTOR.....
POSITIONS TO TUTOR AT KAILUA HIGH....

Aloha TRiO SSS,

Kailua High School is looking for college students who would like to tutor students in core subject courses. You can either get paid or use the hours for your scholarship volunteer hours. See below for a description of the position. Please note, if you can't make it this semester, you might want to plan your spring semester so that you can tutor. Also, if you're an SI, it sounds similar to the SI model, except you only have 4-6 students. If you're interested, call Dawn Fraser at 266-7900, ext.2304 or email her at Dawn_Fraser/KAILUAH/HIDOE@notes.k12.hi.us.

Tutors in the AVID classroom:

The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program at Kailua High School, a nationally certified program, is looking for interested college students to assist the AVID elective teacher in facilitating tutorials on Tuesdays and Thursdays. AVID tutorials are held twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursday during the following times: 8:20-9:30, 9:35-10:40, 11:05-12:10, and 12:45-1:50. Responsibilities include: participating in AVID tutor training (using higher level questioning skills to facilitate tutorials), supervising and facilitating groups of 4-6 students in core subject classes (including honors and AP) and reviewing tutorial worksheets to assist the AVID elective teacher in assessing student progress.

As college students, we understand that our tutors may not be able to stay for the entire day and/or both days due to their schedule. Many of the tutors come for 1 or 2 periods a day or both days according to their schedule. The most important thing is that a tutor can commit to the day/time for at least one semester.

The AVID tutorial is not a study hall but models what college students would do in a study group (i.e. use their class notes and prior knowledge to work through a question/problem). The role of the tutor/facilitator is to use higher level questions to help move the direction of the discussion towards helping the group to find their answer.

**Although some students may be looking at putting in hours for their scholarships, we do have a budget to hire tutors for direct contact hours.
