Anna Maria Maugeri's TRiO SSS Success Story

Let me tell you what TRiO has done for my life. I have been through many hard obstacles throughout my life, just like everybody! I decided when the kids grew up it was time for me to focus on my future. In 2010 I decided to go back to school, 1973 was the last time that I attended school. My intentions are to get my Associates to strive for social work, and to be a great counselor for the future of our kids. I want to be productive in today’s society, going back to school is very essential to me. This is where TRiO comes in for me, and how important they are to me and other students. If it weren’t for TRiO I would be very lost. They have helped me in so many ways such as to find tutors for me in the courses that I am enrolled in. Because I have been out of school so long, they have directed me on the right road, and assigned certain tutors for the classes that I have to take. The staff at TRiO, and the tutors such as Roy, Puu, Benji, Rochelle Tyler, and Shanae, have helped me in every positive way. (Thank- God). I would be lost if they took TRiO away from us!!!! TRiO has become like a second home for me. They have always been there for all of us students who need that guidance to better ourselves. PLEASE do not think of closing down TRiO as so many students would be very lost without this group. It has been such a great pleasure for all of us students who use TRiO. This is something that should not be taken away. It is for the better of today’s education to have TRiO in our lives. So please think twice about shutting TRiO down. We need TRiO, and TRiO needs us.

For the last 20 years, I have been a single mother of two. There have been many obstacles that I as a single mother had to face. In the beginning of the years while raising my children, the father was very abusive to me. I found myself getting beat up and ending in the hospital, every month. This went on for quite a while. I finally had enough and had him arrested. This is where Welfare came in to help my children, and myself. I had no skills so this is the path that needed to be done. Before I had children I was a model and in the restaurant business. As I became a mother those skills were over, and I focused on raising my children. As the years went on when the children were in intermediate school, I had a very serious problem! This problem led me to be a heroin addict for almost 20 years. As the years went on, this addiction led me to end up in a wheel-chair. The reason for ending up in a wheel-chair was that my bones in my hips got deteriorated. I was at my rock bottom!!! In 2008 this is where my brother in California came to my rescue. I had BEGGED him to please help me get off this terrible addiction. He was looking into rehabs in California none would take me; my dosage of use was too high. This is where I started to detox at my brother’s house for one year. This is when the foot work began, one of the most horrible situations to deal with. Eventually I started to come back to life, and had my first hip surgery. I was diagnosed with type two diabetes, changed my diet and I had successfully overcome diabetes. I came back home to Hawaii and a year later had my second hip surgery. I got involved in the meetings for NA and turned my life around. This is where school came in and I needed to have a meaning to my life. I want to help others that are in a domestic, or substance abusive relationship. This is why I’m attending Windward Community College, so I can get my Associates in becoming a Social Worker, or counselor. After I graduate I want to be able to make a difference in becoming one of the best counselors, or social worker this island will have to offer. For the last 2 years I have been volunteering at Castle Hospital helping people in wheel-chairs, gurneys, etc. I know that these goals that I want to accomplish might take some time, but like anything else in life, if you want something good to come out of all this, patience will definitely be worthwhile
Thank-You Anna Maria Maugeri
