My name is Manaia Moea’i and I reside on the north shore in
a little town called Hau’ula. Igraduated from Kahuku high school in 2007. Shortly after, I decided to work at the
Polynesian Culture Center as a food service worker to help my family
financially because of my father’s passing on October 9, 2002. At the same time
I had no desire to attend college and thought it would be just for the smart
people. I lacked confidence in attending
college because I barely made it through high school. I was especially weak in
math and English. As time went on and with
a lot of encouragement to attend college from my family and close friends, I
decided to take a chance and try it out.
And I did! When I first heard
about Trio and the services provided, I applied without hesitation and soon
became a trio participant. I’m in my
third semester of being a trio participant and have been blessed to be apart of
such a great program that offers free tutoring services in math and
English. I am so thankful to have a
tutor in both subjects who is patient and always there to encourage and help me
succeed. Though both subjects are
challenging, with tutoring it helps me to understand the material better at my
pace and that allows me to get better grades on papers, and pass my exams. I admire the positive vision of Trio
employee’s and staff to help students like me learn and grow and making sure we
are doing our best in college. The use of
computers, with free printing and tutoring, helps me become a better student in
being organized, confident and happy. I
now have a positive attitude towards college and will be forever grateful to
trio and the services provided to help me.
I am currently taking my pre- requisites to become a registered nurse
and plan to transfer to a four year nursing program in the mainland. Trio is
the best!
