My name
is Michael Denis, I am a non-traditional student at Windward Community
College. I have always been interested
in plants and always wanted to attend college, but I was scared due to past
educational experiences. Part of my
challenge with education was labeled as a non-verbal learning disorder. In my middle adulthood I learned that I am
an adult living with Asperger’s syndrome, and I also learned that school is a
viable option for me if I access the appropriate resources, including
TRiO. I believe I am a TRiO success story--
work in progress.
I have
been attending school for three semesters now and have consistently improved my
grades and academic skills. My biggest challenge was to improve my
learning skills and to gain a sense of confidence. I have been able to do this through the
assistance and resources offered at the TRiO program on campus.
I feel
that I have utilized the TRiO resources on a daily basis to help me with my
schooling. Mostly everyday that I am on campus
you can find me in the TRiO learning lab; working on the computers, getting
tutored in math, eating, and meeting with a TRiO advisor to help me with my
academic journey. I have also made
friends at TRiO and been volunteering with activities on and off campus.
My
academic goals include graduating from WCC with a Certificate in Plant
Biotechnology, then moving on the the University of Hawaii at Manoa to work
towards a Bachelors Degree in Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences. I truly that feel that I can accomplish these
goals with the continued support of TRiO.
