Aloha,
my name is Hazel Zablan. I am a mother of three children and seven
grandchildren. TRiO has been part of my
family since I attended Windward Community College in 2003.
When I graduated in 1971 from Kailua High School, my dream was to attend college. I was not able to attend college after I graduated. I began working to help my parents. I had my oldest daughter in 1975 and my dream was still there, where I could reach for it, but I was not able to attend college. While life went on, in 1983, I had my second child. Then two years later I had my third child. I still could not attend college. Motherly duties were my priority, and I did a lot of volunteering for my children when they started to attend preschool. Then at Waimanalo School, I was hired by Principal Marion Holokai to work as an educational aide with the 7th and 8th grade Special Education students. Life continued and I worked for about five years in the DOE system. When Mr. Bush made into law, No Child Left Behind, life really changed and so now what? I needed a degree to keep my job! Now what do I do? Go for my dreams? Yes, I did and I registered and started my first class with Ethnobotany. My dream is not yet fulfilled because I have my bachelor’s and master’s to earn.
So how is TRiO a part of my family? When I started to attend WCC, I would at times go to TRiO to use their computer and write my papers for my classes. I have a son who works at WCC; he was in the Upward Bound program, and he continued his education with WCC. He received his AA, Certificate in Hawaiian Studies, and he just got his bachelor’s in Hawaiian Studies from UH Manoa. He is also employed at TRiO. His name is Bransen Zablan; today he is known as Pu’u in TRiO. What about Ben Zablan? hehe love you!
I have my second oldest attending WCC and is a tutor in TRiO. Ben received his certificate in Hawaiian Studies and now is pursuing his bachelor’s in Hawaiian Studies. And now I have my oldest daughter, Shannon who is attending WCC and working part time in the non-credit office on campus and is also a tutor for TRiO.
TRiO is magnificent in the service they provided for my family to excel in their academics and to continue in their education. I am one to say thank you for motivating us.
