Hollister Kehaulani Iwashita's TRiO SSS Success Story
It has been five years since I was laid off by Aloha Airlines. At that time, that was my career for life. The abrupt closure of the company made me take a new look at my life and make some decisions. After weighing my options, returning to school was a no brainer and with the help of TRiO Student Support System (SSS) I was able to accomplish many goals.
Currently, I am an undergraduate student at University of Hawaii-West Oahu majoring in Sociology. As President of the Sociology Club I facilitate workshops; coordinate community service and fundraising for the club. While at Windward Community College, I participated in the Service-Learning Program; Vice-President of Associated Students of University of Hawaii at Windward Community College; worked part-time as a Peer Mentor (student Employee), and graduated Summa Cum Laude all with help from TRiO.
TRiO was my safety net that provided me with a place to study. The resources provided were immeasurable from free food, tutoring, printing, access to computers and encouragement. The staff continues to be fully present for anyone needing help from academic related issues to personal growth and give much of their personal time by providing assistance in filling out FAFSA applications, tax documents, facilitating workshops, and 12-24 hour access to facilities during mid-terms and finals.
As I sit contemplating this letter, it is difficult for me to express the immense sense of acceptance and connectedness I felt while a participant of TRiO. I truly believe that without TRiO SSS many people would not be able to fulfill their educational goals and return to WCC and the community to give back what they were so generously given. Budget cuts would surly cripple this irreplaceable program and be detrimental to the educational needs of many struggling students and the community. I humbly ask for your continued support for the TRiO Student Support System.
Respectfully,
Hollister Kehaulani Iwashita
