My name is Lesieli Ah You and I have
been at Windward for three years. I started school in January 2010 (or
was it 2009?) not knowing what Trio was and remained in the dark about it until
the following spring semester. I had been out of school for several years
and none of my immediate family had ever graduated or gone to college. I
live in Laie, the North Shore, and it was tough to catch the bus and work while
attending. No one else in my community was going to WCC, that I knew of,
and that made me feel lonely and overwhelmed by school.
A classmate of mine (whose name, unfortunately, I cannot remember) told me about Trio. I was pursuing the Vet Assisting Certificate and I needed the basic Math 24 and Math 25 to take the Veterinary Math it required. I was bummed that I couldn't take two math classes in one semester so I was certain I would wind up graduating far later than I was hoping. It just so happened that Trio was offering a summer of math tutoring. Basically, you applied for it and upon acceptance, you made a commitment. They would offer tutoring from the hours of 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, every weekday, from sometime in May to a few days before the fall semester. They provided math materials, a place to study, and a tutor and it was ultimately up to you to study and do well. They had it split into two halves. You could take Math 24 the first half, Math 25 the second. Ideally, you would take the placement test at the end and wind up being placed in a Math 100 or higher (thereby, having passed Math 24 and Math 25.)
Without going into all the heartache and brain-frying involved, I will say that, thanks to Trio, I passed both and got into Math 100. (Being the glutton for punishment I am, I took Math 101 and Math 103 the next semester.) Trio did more than help. It was their support and the friendships and relationships I made there that allowed me to continue going to school and pursuing the degree for Veterinary Technicians, too. It's a great place to hang out and see people and get help. I also received math tutoring from Trio which helped immensely to get me to where I am today: ready to graduate with Vet Assisting Certificate and Veterinary Technician Degree. I love you, Trio (and people who make Trio Trio)!
