Aloha TRiO SSS,

Since we've been hearing complaints from you about math courses and instructors (i.e., "_____ doesn't help us, he just points to the SI and tells us to ask her", "we basically teach ourselves", "it always felt like _____ didn't want to spend time helping students", etc.), we did a little checking and wanted to let you know what we found.

For the 2012 ...1st and 2nd summer session, 2012 fall semester, 2013 spring, and 2013 first summer session, there were 366 registrations for MATH 19 and MATH 28 in which three instructors taught those courses.

Overall, 68% did not pass their course as only 32% passed with an A, B, or C and the rate was the same for TRiO SSS as well as non-TRiO SSS participants.

For one of the instructors, only 12% of the TRiO SSS participants passed his classes and 17% of the Non-TRiO SSS participants passed.

Two other instructors taught MATH 19 and MATH 28 during the summer math program and the pass rate was 87%. One of the instructors taught the regular lecture sections of MATH 24 and MATH 25 during the summer math program and the pass rate was 97%.

As a TRIO participant, we highly encourage you to make an appointment prior to selecting your courses so you can make a better informed decision if you need to register for MATH 19 or MATH 28. This is especially important if you're using financial aid or on financial aid probation as your success or failure could result in you owing money back to the feds or losing your financial aid and be placed on probation, suspension, or dismissal from WCC.
