Health and Safety Notice
The feral chicken problem has become a health and safety issue as they are intruding into our buildings and they are dropping a large amount of feces around our buildings. What has contributed to this problem with the chickens is that they are constantly being fed, often by students, faculty and staff. We ask that you do not feed the chickens on campus because the resulting behaviors not only contribute to our chicken intrusion problem, but threaten the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Feeding the chickens has inadvertently "trained" them to seek food from humans, sometimes aggressively. Chickens have reportedly followed people into classrooms and offices while seeking to be fed. This learned food-seeking behavior is disrupting the educational mission of the college. The chickens will survive without being fed by WCC students, faculty and staff. Their survival will actually be enhanced by living in a healthier and safer environment and having a more appropriate relationship with humans. But first, it is imperative that we decrease the population of feral chickens on our campus. Please do not feed the chickens and let them find their food elsewhere; and help us to create a safer and healthier environment. Thank you for your cooperation.
