Grace Liava'a's TRiO SSS Success Story

I have been a trio member since fall semester 2011. Trio has helped me in many ways to reach my potential and gave me the confidence in attaining a higher education. I am not good at expressing myself publicly however, I would like to share my gratitude about trio. When I first came to Windward Community College, I had a lot of fears because it was the first time in 25 years I actually committed to going back to school. I felt insecure, I felt too old, and I felt I wasn't smart enough. With all the negative thoughts rushing through my brain, I still had a still small voice telling me everything will be alright. With the support of my children I dove in and I am still here four semesters later.

Trio has been an important role in how I overcame my fears of insecurity and gave me a better perspective of how they made me feel when I felt alone. When I went to the financial aid office in 2011, they were telling me about the various resources the campus has and that I should go and check it out when I can. I was told that Financial aid recipients qualify for assistance by trio. I went to trio to see how I could sign up and see what I needed to do to be a part of trio. Kaulana was the person who helped me at the time and I got all excited because he said this is the place to be. He assured me that trio had a lot of resources and I should take advantage of. This is one of the best things that ever happened to me in my college experience. Trio has helped me personally with tutoring, counseling when I felt overwhelmed with school, activities of causes, feeding me, snacks are affordable, counseling about my college path, peers that are ready to help, but the one that sticks out the most to me about trio is the way I felt coming to trio. It is like my home, I'm comfortable and I am myself. The staff is AWESOME. They do so much for us that sometimes we have to remember  to say Thank you. I am ever grateful to trio for all the help it provides not only to myself but to others. Mr Roy Inouye has been an excellent director of this wonderful program, I have come to know many others that are always here to assist in any way they can.

I did not have a future goal when I first came here but with trio's assistance I have made great changes in my life that I know what I want and where I'm going to go...Associates first, Bachelor's Degree in Social Work next, than Masters in Social Work...
